This is Typolar

The Northern European Type Collaboration

The Northern European type collaboration Typolar builds on the Scandinavian tradition of sturdy functionalism. For us it means clever type families built on fresh ideas. Working closely with the publishing industry has made our fonts ideally suited for editorial work. Moreover, many have found them a great fit in branding and identities. And that’s how we like it.

Besides design our members also teach, run workshops and write. At the moment we are based in Helsinki.

Jarno Lukkarila

CEO, Creative Director

Jarno Lukkarila became devoted to type design after graduating from Type & Media in The Hague, and assisting at Büro Petr van Blokland + Claudia Mens in 2001. Having studied at Aalto University in Helsinki, he began an independent type foundry in 2006. With some encouraging push from customers and font users, it has gradually evolved into type designers' collective.

A careful and precise approach to design has brought Jarno to work with the leading Finnish publishing, IT and consumer brands. His work has been successful at, for example the Type Directors Club in New York and the Morisawa Awards in Tokyo. His typeface Tanger Serif was selected as one of the best in ten years at Letter.2 by Association Typographique Internationale.

Besides leading the creative work at Typolar, Jarno takes care of the technical production and publishing of the typefaces.
