OPH:n mallikirjaimet fontteina (in English below)

Olemme saaneet valmiiksi ensimmäisen paketin uusista vuoden 2016 mallikirjainfonteista.

We have finalized the first set of typefaces based on the new recommendation for handwriting. These typefaces include exactly equal letterforms as introduced by the Finnish National Board of Education and designed by Jarno Lukkarila. In addition there are typefaces featuring grid lines, stroke directions and different weights.

Typefaces are available for licensing especially for schools, homes and publishers. Please contact us by email for more information and delivery instructions.

The Finnish National Handwriting Reform

(In English below)

Opetushallitus julkaisi tänään uudistetut käsinkirjoituksen mallikirjaimet. Ne on suunnitellut Typolarin perustaja Jarno Lukkarila osana Opetushallituksen suunnittelutyöryhmää. Uusi malli korvaa aikaisemmat tekstaus- ja käsialakirjaimet vuoden 2016 syksyllä.

Oppilaat ovat tähän asti aloittaneet kirjoittamisen tekstaus-kirjaimilla ensimmäisellä luokalla ja siirtyneet myöhemmin sidostettuun käsialatyyliin. Kahden eri kirjoitustyylin oppiminen on muuttunut haasteelliseksi, sillä lapset suosivat näppäimistöä jo varhaisessa vaiheessa ja kirjoittamisen harjoittelu vähenee. Siksi opettamisen resurssit halutaan keskittää vain yhden tyylin oppimiseen.

Uudet mallikirjaimet on suunniteltu pysäyttämään kirjoitustaidon heikkeneminen. Kirjainten runkomuoto vastaa ns. kursiivi-aakkosia, joissa viiva kulkee nousematta paperista koko kirjaimen ajan.

Finnish National Board of Education published a new recommendation for Finnish handwriting early today. New letterforms are designed by Jarno Lukkarila who participated in a committee set up for the renewal. Starting from 2016 only a so called print writing will be provided leaving the joined-up cursive writing – as we know it now – in the past.

Since 2004 students have started their handwriting in print at the age of 7 and moved to joined-up cursive during later years. It has proven increasingly problematic to develop a sufficient running writing style with current amount of practice and two writing systems. This is largely due to lack of time and keyboards children will prefer over handwriting.

New letterforms were introduced to counteract this trend. These characters take elements from cursive handwriting to improve the flow of writing, but they don’t include linking hooks. Hooks become easily over populated in text written in Finnish with many double letters such as ‘ii’, ‘ll’ and ‘nn’. In overall writing model has been kept as neutral, obvious and unambiguous as possible. It creates a basis for coherent and readable text, where each writer will add they own personal mark on. As writing skills improve and speed up, joined letters or ligatures are welcome to appear spontaneously.

Annually about 59 000 students will start their writing lessons with these letterforms in Finnish primary schools.

Typolar will publish the new handwriting letterforms as a set of digital typefaces soon.

Altis ’High Definition’ Web Fonts

We have equipped our Altis Web Fonts with handmade outline-to-bitmap instructions for optimal on-screen performance. This process, called hinting, has a significant impact on readability, clarity and cross-platform functionality of a web font. When done to match the TrueType criteria, hinting smoothes over text especially in Windows and IE browsers (the older the version the greater the effect).

There are few ways to hinting. It may be left undone, be done by an algorithm or put in place by hand. The last one pleases the human eye the best. An elaborate hinting process goes down to single letterforms in each size separately to tweak individual pixels into right places. To do that, it requires a great amount of hours just for a single weight in a type family.

See Altis in use at for example www.finpro.fi and www.unisa.edu.au.

Walmer Marker Script

For a while we have duck into disappearing practice of marker pen lettering in grocery stores and supermarkets. Amateur writers like shop keepers themselves used to write large posters and price tags in this particularly inviting style, which constitutes of simple rules and writers’ mannerisms.

Typolar’s Walmer typeface follows closely the tradition of lettering with wide nipped markers. It has the feel and characteristics of the hand written text down to several different iterations of each letterform. You can almost smell the ink from your Retina display, when using Walmer for example on web or apps.
